History - Pompano Beach, Florida
Pompano Beach offers the lifestyle of a serene coastal area with the perks of a major urban zone. Located on Florida’s southeast coast, halfway between Miami and Palm Beach, Pompano Beach is conveniently located close to various attractions and entertainment destinations. While there had been scattered immigrants in Pompano Beach from the mid-1880s, the first recorded permanent residents of the area were Frank Sheene and George Butler as well as their families. They arrived in the Pompano area in 1896 as railway personnel.
Frank Sheene gave the town its name after jotting down the name of the fish he had for dinner during his survey of the area. Pompano, the name of the fish where Pompano Beach got its name from, is abundant in the waters of the Atlantic. Pompano Beach is located near several international seaports, highways and railways and two international airports. The city experiences a tropical rain-forest climate. There are around 17 post secondary institutions within ten miles of downtown Pompano Beach, but most of these are for-profit schools or those that focus on a particular field.
Economy
Pompano’s economy is based on high technology, tourism and light manufacturing. The city allocates 3,000 acres of land for commercial and industrial development. Efforts to restore rundown areas near the town’s beach have contributed to the growth of the city’s construction industry. Pompano Beach has a very attractive tax structure. In fact, the town enjoys one of the lowest tax rates in the state. Around 1/2 of general revenue in the country comes from Pompano’s 6 percent sales tax. There’s no inventory tax, state income tax and no state property tax in the city.
Tourist Attractions and Accommodations
There are over 200 restaurants and 2,000 tourist accommodations that you can enjoy when you visit Pompano Beach. The city is also home to various golf courses that challenge the skills of new and seasoned golfers alike. Pompano Beach is also the perfect place if you enjoy diving or fishing. There are numerous marinas that offer small boat rentals, fishing and diving trips. If you just want to relax, you can enjoy the city’s 3.5 miles of white beach and take a stroll with your friends or special someone.
Several yearly events are held in Pompano Beach including The Holiday Yuletide Parade, Pompano Beach Holiday Boat Parade, Annual Nautical Flea Market, St. Patrick’s Irish Festival, Pompano Beach Seafood Festival and St. Coleman’s Italian Festival. Be sure to include the local parks in your list when you visit Pompano Beach. Local parks include the Fern Forest Nature Park and Pompano Park. The city has smaller parks like the Harbors Edge Park, Scott Meyers Memorial Park, Kester Park and Cresthaven Park.
